Today, I am thrilled to share a simple and delicious recipe for Thai Homemade Wonton Soup with you. This soup is a comforting street food classic in Thailand that is perfect for a chilly day or a light meal.
These tender wontons are meat-filled dumplings typically wrapped with egg wonton wrappers and served in clear chicken broth soup. Ground pork, ground chicken, shrimp, or crab are the most commonly used fillings. For my recipe, I used basic ingredients that you likely already have on hand, except for the egg wonton wrappers, which can be found at an Asian grocery store or local Asian market, often near the fresh egg noodles section.
Egg wonton wrappers are flat squares that can be boiled, fried, or baked. The dough is yellow, soft, easy to fold and cut, and you can make a large batch in advance and store them in the freezer for a quick and tasty meal anytime.
For my homemade wonton filling, I marinated ground pork with garlic, cilantro root, ground pepper, soy sauce, and sesame oil for about 15 minutes before wrapping them in the egg wonton wrapper. For the chicken broth soup, I used a simple shortcut by simmering chicken broth cubes with cabbage. The taste is fantastic, and I'm sure you'll be impressed. It's the ideal dish for a cozy day!
And if you're looking to enhance the flavor of your wonton soup, consider adding fish ball, shrimp ball, or meatball. But don't worry if you don't have any of these ingredients, as your wonton soup bowl will still be delicious thanks to the juicy and flavorful marinated ground pork filling inside.
Making wontons is a breeze – simply place one teaspoon of the ground pork mixture filling in the center of each wrapper, wet the edges of the wrapper's four corners with your finger, bring all four corners up over the filling, and press to seal. You can create and design your wonton wrapper however you like, but make sure to seal your dumpling well with water.
To make this recipe, you are going to need:
- 200 g. Ground pork
- 20 egg wonton wrappers
- 2 tablespoon sesame oil
- 3 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 teaspoon ground pepper
- 2-3 cilantro roots
- 6 garlic cloves
- 1 chicken broth cube ( for soup)

- 100 g. Cabbage ( for soup)
- 1 tablespoon garlic and cilantro from food processor ( for soup)
- Fish ball , shrimp ball ( optional)
- Bok choy
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make Homemade Wonton Soup Recipe
1 Gather all the necessary ingredients.
2 Using a food processor, combine garlic cloves and cilantro roots until well mixed.
3 Blend garlic and cilantro root in a food processor, then mix the resulting paste with ground pork along with soy sauce, sesame oil, and ground pepper. Ensure that everything is well blended.
4 To fill the wonton, take one teaspoon of the ground pork mixture and place it in the center of each wrapper. Then, wet the edges of the wrapper using your finger and fold all four corners up and over the filling. Press down gently to seal the wonton.
5 To prepare the soup, start by placing a chicken broth cube into a soup pot with water on medium-high heat. Then add 1 tablespoon of garlic and cilantro root from the food processor, soy sauce, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes or until the cabbage is cooked.
6 Let the chicken broth cube infuse into the soup. Additionally, if you have shrimp balls or fish balls, you can add them to the soup as well.
7 To cook the wontons, first bring a large pot of water to boil. Once the water is boiling, carefully add the wontons and cook for about 3-4 minutes or until they float to the surface. Use a slotted spoon to remove the wontons from the pot and drain the water well. Transfer the cooked wontons to a serving bowl.
8 Using the same pot, blanch the bok choy for about 30 seconds. Drain the water well and move the bok choy into a serving bowl.
9 Serve the soup by ladling it over the wontons and bok choy in the serving bowl. Garnish the soup with fried garlic and spring onion for added flavor and texture. Enjoy your homemade Thai wonton soup!
