When I visited Japan last year, I stumbled upon a hidden gem stall in Osaka while looking for a quick lunch spot. They served a delicious Japanese beef curry that was spicy and peppery, with a mouthwateringly thick curry.
I was completely hooked. so much so that I decided to recreate the taste of that dish at home. Here is my take on the famous Japanese beef curry dish!
This recipe is very easy to make and takes less than 40 minutes. You just need to prepare some simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen, such as beef, potatoes, carrots, onions, and an apple. Then, drop the instant Japanese curry roux from the box into the pot.
The taste of Japanese curry differs from Indian and Thai curry. It's uniquely sweet and savory, with occasional spiciness depending on the instant curry roux you buy. Typically, there are three levels of spiciness: mild, medium, and hot. The curry sauce is rich and thick, complemented by a combination of vegetables and sweetness from apples and honey.
For my recipe, I use fatty cuts of beef to enhance the flavor of the curry around the meat. However, if you prefer not to use beef, you can adapt the recipe with any protein of your choice, such as chicken, tofu, fried pork, or vegetables.
This Japanese dish pairs exceptionally well with steamed Japanese rice and udon noodles if you have them available. It's the perfect dish to make on a chilly night, especially when accompanied by hot miso soup to keep you comfy and warm. Be sure to give this recipe a try!
